Face to Face:  The Loomis Portraits by John Brewster, Jr.

Through October 31, 2008.  A new, temporary exhibit featuring Connecticut born artist John Brewster, Jr.’s 1822 portraits of Torrington natives Reverend Harvey Loomis and Ann Battell Loomis.

Rev. Harvey Loomis and his wife, Anna Battell Loomis represented much of the promise of early 19th century New England.  Raised in Torringford, the couple moved to Maine where their portraits were painted by itinerant artist John Brewster.

John Brewster, Jr. was born in Hampton, CT but also lived in Massachusetts and Maine, where he painted the Loomis portraits.  At age 51, he was a member of the first class of the American School For the Deaf in 1817.  His style is recognized for its warmth and humanity.

The lives of the subjects, the work of the artist, and a glimpse of the world each inhabited are presented... Face to Face.

Tues. – Fri. 10:00 – 4:00; Sat. – Sun. 12:00 – 4:00              Suggested donation $2.00
