Torrington History Collection: Fine Art
As with other collections, the focus of the Fine Art Collection is its connection to Torrington. To that end, the Society collects work by Torrington artists as well as art that is associated with Torrington people, places or events.
Although it is not one of the Society’s larger collections, the Fine Art Collection is significant for its holdings of early 19th century portraits by American artists.
The Torrington History Collection includes two portraits by John Brewster, Jr. (1766-1854) and three portraits by Erastus Salisbury Field (1805-1900). These paintings are in addition to the six portraits by Ammi Phillips (1788-1865) which are part of the Hotchkiss-Fyler Collection.
Also of note in the Fine Art Collection are: “The End of John Brown”, an oil painting by Ervin Nussbaum (1914-1996), a large collection of works by Torrington sculptor Paolo Abbate (1884-1973), several paintings and drawings by American muralist and WPA artist Arthur S. Covey (1877-1960) and paintings by Connecticut artists Harry R. Ballinger (1892-1993) and Whitlock Knaus.
