Torrington, CT - The Torrington Historical Society is pleased to announce that the Community Foundation of Northwest Connecticut has awarded the Historical Society a grant of $10,000 to support the restoration of the slate roof on the Hotchkiss-Fyler House Museum.
The Hotchkiss-Fyler House Museum is one of Litchfield county’s most important cultural resources and tourist attractions. The house museum is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and anchors the north end of the Downtown Torrington Historic District. The Hotchkiss-Fyler House Museum was created through a bequest from Gertrude Hotchkiss in 1956 and has since been recognized as one of the best house museums in Connecticut.
The roof project will replace deteriorated asphalt shingles with natural slate shingles and will restore the roof to the way it looked in 1900 when the home was constructed.
The historical integrity of the architecture will be restored with a durable material that will protect the house and its contents for the next century. The project conforms to the Secretary of the Interior Standards for the Treatment of Historic Properties.
The Torrington Historical Society has also received partial support for this project from the State Historic Preservation Office of the Department of Economic and Community Development through Connecticut’s
Historic Restoration Fund.
