Instructors trained by the Australian family physician and tai chi expert, Dr. Paul Lam, are offering free Tai Chi classes Tuesday evenings outside on the lovely grounds of the Torrington Historical Society at 192 Main Street from 6:30 to 7:15 pm starting July 8 through August 27 (8 weeks). In case of inclement weather, there is no session.
Originating in China as a foundation for self-defense, tai chi is most frequently practiced nowadays as an efective exercise for health. An estimated 100 million people around the world practice, or as the Chinese like to say ‘play’ tai chi (taiji) or its parent, chi gong (qigong), on a daily basis. Tai Chi consists of a choreography of slow, fluid and gentle movements of the arms and legs performed standing or seated. People of all ages and abilities are welcome.
The many health benefits of tai chi are documented by medical studies to be generally beneficial to all and can help specific aliments such as arthritis, digestion, osteoporosis, diabetes, hypertension, and the immune system.
The exercises enhance cardiovascular and respiratory systems: breathing is deepened and slowed, improving oxygenation and relaxation. Tai Chi gently builds muscle strength, improves mobility, flexibility and balance.
The evenings are meant to be fun and informative. Wear good shoes (no flip-flops!) and comfortable clothes. Note that being outside on the lawn, the terrain is uneven. Drop-ins are welcome: registration not required. Instructors are Marty Kidder, Marianne Christiano and Luisa de Castro.
For more information call (860) 733-5553 or (860) 803-4674.
