Torrington History Collection: Scope of the Collection

The Torrington History Collection includes artifacts which document Torrington’s history from Native American settlement to the present.

As such, this collection is quite comprehensive and includes thousands of objects that represent the social, cultural, industrial, municipal, military, and ethnic history of this locale.

Unlike many Connecticut museums whose history is centered on the 18th and early 19th centuries, the strength of Torrington’s collection is post-1850 when a period of great change began to occur.  It was at this time that Torrington shifted from an agricultural community to a factory town; this in turn brought major growth and wave after wave of immigration. In that respect, the development of the town echoed key changes and events that occurred in cities across the nation.

Of particular note in the Torrington History Collection are the:

- Manufacturing History Collection
- Fine Art Collection
- Ethnic History Collection
